The “Defimode Paris 2003” Fashion Show

The “Defimode Paris 2003” event was an initiative undertaken by RIWD in collaboration with a team of students from L’Institut d’Etudes Politiques of Paris. It comprised the organization of a fashion show for women with disabilities, the aim of which was to challenge stereotypes and have different perception of people with disabilities.

This event was held - and filmed - on 27 September, 2003. Sixteen very attractive European women with various disabilities paraded in clothes designed by Mrs. Adela Olejnik-Bîcat.

“Defimode Paris 2003” was not intended to be a one-off but rather part of an ongoing process reflecting RIWD’s global long-term objectives. It sought to bring a greater awareness of the indispensable need to look at women with disabilities in a different way. It gathered together both able-bodied and disabled people - women and men -.

The fundamental message of the disabled women at the origin of the project was to contribute to changes in attitude and, participe in the reinforcement of social links between able-bodied and disabled people.

The grant received from the European Year of Disabled People unit follows the selection of RIDW among about 700 hundred projects. In fact, “Defimode Paris 2003” was sponsored by two French government ministries and well-known private donors. The presence of Mrs. Nicole Ameline (former Minister for Equal Opportunity for Women) as well as 400 other very enthusiastic attendees demonstrated the great significance of this event.
